What to do if the fermented mattress material gets wet

The moisture level of fermented mattress materials is crucial for proper fermentation. Typically, the ideal moisture content for a fermentation bed is between 60% and 65%. If the material is too dry, it can slow down the fermentation process and reduce its effectiveness. On the other hand, excessive moisture can lead to poor aeration, delayed heating, and unpleasant odors. In severe cases, it can damage the fermentation bed and even render it unusable. Accidental water exposure—whether from overwatering or rain infiltration—can quickly disrupt the balance. Therefore, it's essential to monitor and maintain the fermentation bed regularly, following the manufacturer’s guidelines closely. If the bed becomes too wet, here are some effective steps you can take (for detailed methods, refer to the Kimbera Fermentation Bed manual for wet adjustments): 1. Add dry litter such as dry sawdust on top of the existing material to absorb excess moisture. You can also mix in some functional bacteria to help restore the fermentation process. 2. Remove the overly wet litter and replace it with fresh, drier material to bring the moisture back to an optimal level. 3. Reduce the number of pigs in the pen or increase the available space. A general rule is to provide 1.2 to 1.5 square meters of fermentation bed per pig. 4. Improve ventilation by ensuring the bottom of the bed has proper perforations. Good airflow helps prevent moisture buildup and supports efficient microbial activity. By taking these steps promptly, you can maintain the health and efficiency of your fermentation system, ensuring it continues to function properly over time.
