A farmer from Dezhou recently asked, “Why are the cucumbers growing unevenly? What can be done about it?â€
Answer: First, improper fertilization is a major cause. Some farmers rush to apply chicken manure without fully decomposing it as a base fertilizer, which can burn the roots and lead to uneven growth. In some cases, after the roots are damaged, the seedlings grow inconsistently. Additionally, in certain greenhouses, the presence of alkaline substances from improperly fermented chicken manure can cause similar issues, especially when over-applied.
To address root burning caused by these problems, experts from the vegetable association recommend using fully fermented organic fertilizers and applying them early. During the cucumber’s growing period, it's also beneficial to flush the plants with biological bacterial fertilizers like Jianzhibao or Yanzhen series products.
Second, uneven watering due to an uneven greenhouse floor can also cause irregular growth. If the ground isn’t level, water distribution becomes unbalanced—higher areas get less water, while lower areas may become waterlogged. Many farmers also mix fertilizer into irrigation water, which can worsen the problem.
To fix this, level the ground before planting and ensure even watering. Avoid overwatering some plants while neglecting others. Also, prevent stagnant water from collecting at the front of the greenhouse.
Third, root-knot nematodes can cause uneven growth. If a greenhouse has infestations, the damage varies across the area—some spots are more affected than others. This leads to inconsistent plant development.
For control, you can irrigate the roots with 1.8% avermectin diluted between 2000 to 3000 times. One farmer tried this method, but the results were not very noticeable. It’s best to apply it after watering, using about 200 ml per plant.
Fourth, differences in seedling size during planting can also contribute. Although most farmers grow enough seedlings, sometimes diseases at the nursery stage can leave them short on healthy plants. In such cases, they might borrow seedlings from neighbors, leading to uneven growth.
To manage this, ensure that seedlings are evenly distributed when planting. You can also spray a solution of "Harvest No. 1" diluted 800 times to promote uniform growth among the plants.
By addressing these factors, farmers can significantly improve the consistency and quality of their cucumber crops.
