In the sweltering summer season, when temperatures and humidity levels are at their peak, unused straw can be repurposed to grow straw mushrooms. This method not only makes efficient use of agricultural waste but also offers a sustainable way to cultivate a nutritious and popular edible fungus.
Before starting, it's essential to properly prepare the growing site. First, clean the shed thoroughly and repair any damaged plastic film. Disinfect both the ground and walls using an appropriate solution. Then, cover the roof with wheat straw to provide shade and help regulate temperature. Create raised beds that are 80 centimeters wide and 10 centimeters high, and dig a 60-centimeter-wide drainage channel between them to prevent waterlogging.
For the raw materials, soak wheat straw, wheat bran, and *Pleurotus ostreatus* (oyster mushroom) in a 5% lime water solution until the pH level reaches 12–13. This alkaline environment is ideal for mushroom growth and helps suppress harmful pathogens.
The day before sowing, fill the pots with water and spray them with 5% lime water first, followed by a diluted solution of phoxim (an insecticide) to control pests. Next, sprinkle 30% of the soaked wheat straw into the sorghum flour and press it down firmly. Repeat this process for three layers, covering the top with 1–1.5 cm of soil to form a mound-like structure. Immediately after, cover the bed with a plastic mulch. Make three rows of small holes in the plastic to allow for proper air circulation and moisture retention.
Straw mushrooms thrive in temperatures around 35°C. If the greenhouse temperature rises above 45°C, remove the plastic cover to ventilate and cool the area. The moisture content on the surface of the growing material should be maintained at about 70%. If it becomes too dry, spray a 1% urea solution onto the pile or directly into the cultivation bed to restore humidity. During the mycelium growth phase, avoid direct sunlight; instead, maintain low light conditions. However, during the fruiting stage, mushrooms require strong light to develop properly. If the pH of the culture material drops below 7, spray it with a 1% clear lime water solution to bring it back to the optimal range.
After inoculation, visible mycelium growth can be observed within 8–10 days, and the first harvest can be made around 11–12 days later. This quick growth cycle makes straw mushroom cultivation an efficient and rewarding option for farmers looking to maximize yield during the summer months.
