Researchers have found that statins have new benefits

Statin drugs, long known for their effectiveness in lowering cholesterol, have been widely prescribed to treat hyperlipidemia and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Recently, researchers have uncovered additional benefits of these medications, including a potential role in reducing mortality from pneumonia and the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A study led by researcher Thomsen followed 29,900 pneumonia patients in Denmark and found that those who were already taking statins before hospitalization had a 31% lower risk of dying compared to those who weren't. Approximately 5% of participants had been on statins prior to their pneumonia diagnosis. The results showed that 16% of non-statin users died within 30 days of admission, rising to 22% within 90 days. In contrast, the death rate was 10% at 30 days and 17% at 90 days for those on statins. Thomsen suggested that statins may help reduce severe lung inflammation, which is often fatal in pneumonia cases. He also noted that inflammation caused by infections can contribute to heart disease and stroke, and statins might offer protection against these conditions as well. In a separate study conducted at the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, researchers found that statins could potentially help prevent DVT, a condition where blood clots form in the legs. These findings suggest that the benefits of statins extend beyond cholesterol control, offering new hope for managing inflammatory and clot-related conditions.
