Strengthen the Late-stage Management of Red Fuji Apple

1. Fertilizer Management. 1. Underground Fertilization. When applying fertilizer in mid to late September, it's recommended to use a balanced compound fertilizer containing phosphorus and potassium, along with a moderate amount of nitrogen. This method can be combined with irrigation, but water quantity must be carefully controlled. Watering and fertilizing at this time helps prevent fruit cracking, enhances fruit coloration, and increases sugar content. 2. Foliar Fertilization. The main goal of foliar spraying is to improve fruit color and boost the tree’s nutritional status. You can use products like Beautiful Fruit Dew, Multi-Fat Milk diluted 1000 times, 0.5% Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate, or Amino Acid Photosynthetic Fertilizer diluted 500 times. Apply this treatment 2-3 times in late September, repeating every 10-15 days.

2. Pruning. The main purpose of pruning during this period is to improve light exposure, which supports better fruit coloring and flower bud development. Techniques include: 1. Opening branch angles to allow more sunlight penetration. 2. Thinning branches by removing unnecessary ones such as upright branches, dense branches, leggy branches, and competing branches. For severely shaded lower branches or those blocking light from above, proper shortening should be done to maintain balance in the canopy.

3. Promoting Fruit Coloration. 1. Leaf Picking. Removing leaves around the fruit helps increase light exposure, which accelerates color development. Starting after the end of September, remove leaves that shade the fruit, including yellow or thin ones. Be careful not to remove too many leaves, as this could lead to sunburn on the fruit surface. Focus on removing leaves within 5 cm of the top and outer parts of the canopy, and within 10 cm of the lower parts of the tree. Retain the petioles when picking. 2. Fruit Turning. After leaf removal, gently turn the fruits to expose all sides to sunlight. This should be done 5-6 days later, and repeated if necessary. Always turn the fruit in the same direction to avoid causing unnecessary fruit drop. 3. Using Reflective Film. Place reflective film under the tree about 20 days before harvest. Remove the fruit bag 3-5 days before, then lay the reflective material beneath the tree to enhance coloration on the lower parts of the canopy.

4. Pest Control. Effective pest management protects both leaves and fruits. In September, there is a peak for diseases like ringworm, which can be treated with Thiophanate-Methyl (1000x) or Carbendazim (600x). Also, common pests such as naval form caterpillars may appear. Remove infested leaves promptly and apply a mixture of Urea (1500x) and Cypermethrin (1500x), which also helps control aphids and other leaf-eating insects.

5. Timely Harvest. Red Fuji apples are typically harvested from late October to early November. Delaying harvest slightly can further enhance fruit color and quality, provided weather conditions remain favorable.
