Meet Your Local Farmer: The Salad Farm

The Salad Farm has been a family-run operation since 2013, when Ronald and Sonya started growing a little bit of everything. Their passion for organic farming has led them to cultivate fresh, healthy produce all year round without the use of toxic chemicals. Every morning, they hand-pick their crops and deliver them the same day, ensuring that customers receive the very best in freshness and quality. Based in Bolivar, Missouri, The Salad Farm is a true local gem, and MaMa Jean’s is proud to support such dedicated farmers. Be sure to try their seasonal offerings—like crisp lettuces, tender spinach, and fragrant cilantro. Here's more from Ronald and Sonya: **What brought you into farming?** It all started as a small experiment. They began planting lettuce and other vegetables for personal use, but soon realized they had way more than they could eat. That’s when they decided to take their surplus to the local farmers market. What started as a side hustle quickly became their full-time job. A friend introduced them to MaMa Jean’s, and they’ve been supplying fresh, organic produce there ever since. **What do you grow?** Their main focus is on leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard. But that’s just the beginning. They also grow carrots, beets, turnips, green onions, cilantro, sweet peas, rutabagas, radishes, parsnips, and celery. In the summer, they expand their range to include tomatoes, bell peppers, okra, cucumbers, onions, blackberries, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, watermelons, and cantaloupes. All of this is grown on two acres, using seven high tunnels to extend the growing season. **How do you deal with weeds and pests?** Organic farming means no synthetic pesticides or herbicides. Weeds are controlled by hand or with a hoe, and sometimes they use plastic mulch to suppress growth. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it for the health of the soil and the environment. **How do you see your role in the community?** For Ronald and Sonya, farming isn’t just about growing food—it’s about providing healthy, locally-sourced options to their neighbors. Their days start at dawn and end at dusk, with constant work in the fields. Farming is a family affair, and even the kids help out. Friends and relatives often pitch in too, making it a true community effort. **Any gardening tips for someone just starting out?** They advise new gardeners to invest in quality seeds—they may cost more, but they yield better results. They also recommend patience and persistence. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with dedication, practice, and a little sweat, anyone can grow something amazing.
