The goal of breeding high-quality male rabbits is to enhance their reproductive capabilities, ensuring the production of a large number of healthy offspring. A good male rabbit should be well-developed, physically strong, and have a high libido. To achieve these standards, proper feeding and management are essential throughout different stages of the year.
While off-season meat rabbit breeding lacks a strict seasonal pattern, it is still influenced by climate, environment, and feed availability. In northern China, rabbit breeding is typically concentrated in spring and autumn, with summer and winter being less favorable seasons for reproduction.
During the off-season, male rabbits are in a recovery phase, so their nutritional needs should be moderate. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, which negatively affects fertility. It’s recommended that during this time, male rabbits are fed 800–1000 grams of green feed daily, along with 30–50 grams of mixed concentrate. In winter, 200–500 grams of roughage and 300–500 grams of carrots per day are beneficial.
For management, male rabbits can be kept in small groups or individual cages. The housing should be dry, well-ventilated, and well-lit. Farmers can create a small exercise area in the yard, allowing rabbits to move around 2–3 times a week for 1–2 hours each session. On a larger scale, increasing cage size helps improve activity levels.
During the breeding season, male rabbits experience the highest physiological stress. Ensuring they remain active and sexually vigorous requires improved nutrition and careful dietary planning.
The quality and quantity of semen depend heavily on diet, especially protein, minerals, and vitamins. Long-term low-protein diets can reduce both sperm count and quality. Male rabbits with poor semen quality can benefit from 15–20 grams of soaked soybeans, bean cakes, or silkworm pupae daily. Feeding herbs like Chinese milk vetch or wolfberry can also improve fertility rates. Calcium is crucial—its ratio to phosphorus should be between 1:1 and 2:1. A deficiency in vitamin A can damage testicular tissue and increase abnormal sperm.
A balanced diet rich in nutrients, easy to digest, and palatable is essential. Daily rations should include 50–100 grams of concentrate and 500–600 grams of green feed. Additionally, long-term nutritional adjustments should begin 15–20 days before mating to meet all nutrient requirements.
In terms of management, male rabbits should be housed separately from females to maintain their sexual drive. Breeding should occur 1–2 times a day, with a rest period of 2–3 days after continuous mating. Before breeding, a health check is necessary to identify any signs of illness, such as loss of appetite, abnormal feces, or symptoms of syphilis. Regular cleaning and disinfection of cages and facilities are vital to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure a safe, healthy environment for the rabbits.
