Japan has developed a robot that can deliver surgical forceps to doctors.

Japan has developed a groundbreaking robot capable of delivering surgical forceps to doctors during operations. The Japan Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, in collaboration with Nagoya University, has unveiled a robotic system designed to assist medical staff by accurately retrieving and handing over surgical instruments. This innovation aims to improve efficiency and reduce the workload on medical personnel. The robot features a rotating bracket that holds up to 20 surgical forceps, each equipped with a unique barcode. Before surgery, all instruments must be registered into the system. During the procedure, a doctor wearing a headset and microphone can verbally request the specific forceps needed. The system then highlights the selected tool on a monitor. Once confirmed, the robot arm retrieves the instrument, adjusts its position, and hands it to the surgeon. After use, the doctor simply places the forceps back into the robot’s tray, and the system scans the barcode to ensure the tool is properly returned to its designated spot. This process minimizes the risk of misplacement and ensures accurate tracking of surgical tools. According to the press release, surgical forceps are essential during operations, and their proper delivery requires trained personnel. However, with a global shortage of nurses, this robot could significantly ease the burden on medical teams. Researchers are planning to test the device in real-world settings following successful animal trials, with the goal of implementing it in hospitals as soon as possible. This development marks a major step forward in the integration of robotics into modern surgical environments.
