Field Symptoms: Verticillium wilt in eggplants typically appears after the fruiting stage, with a sharp increase in the number of infected plants during this period. In the early stages of the disease, the middle and lower leaves begin to show yellowing or chlorosis, which gradually spreads upward. This leads to half of the branches and leaves turning yellow and dying, while the fruits remain soft and underdeveloped. Hence, it is also referred to as "half crazy." In severe cases, the entire plant wilts, the leaves dry up, and the stems become light and hollow. When the roots and stems are peeled, the vascular bundles turn brown, which is why the disease is also known as "black heart disease."
Cause of Disease: Verticillium wilt is a soil-borne disease caused primarily by the fungus *Verticillium dahliae*. The pathogen survives in the soil in the form of mycelia, chlamydospores, and pseudosclerotia, often remaining viable for 6 to 8 years. It infects plants through root wounds, but can also enter through the radicle and root hairs, spreading within the vascular system. Continuous cropping or poor crop rotation increases the buildup of pathogens in the soil, leading to more severe infections.
Environmental factors, especially temperature, play a significant role in disease development. The optimal temperature range for the disease is between 20°C and 25°C. If the average daily temperature remains below 15°C for a prolonged period during the eggplant's growth phase, the disease tends to develop earlier and more severely. Conversely, temperatures above 28°C tend to suppress the disease.
Other contributing factors include heavy clay soils, saline-alkali conditions, double cropping, excessive nitrogen fertilization, use of fresh manure, shallow planting, transplanting seedlings during midday sun, cracked soil, and watering on cold days. These conditions create an environment favorable for the pathogen to thrive and cause outbreaks.
Prevention Measures: To prevent Verticillium wilt in eggplants, applying 20 to 30 kilograms of microbial agents at transplanting time is recommended. After seedlings emerge, using 800 micrograms of "Micro-Micro" multi-purpose agent per acre, diluted 300 times, can help prevent infection. Root irrigation combined with foliar spray is effective. Before symptoms appear, a mixture of thiazole zinc (400 times dilution) and natural brassin (6000 times dilution), such as Shuofeng 481, can be sprayed every 8 to 10 days for 2 to 3 applications. For plants already showing signs of infection, affected roots should be removed promptly. For those just beginning to wilt, applying 300 times diluted "Gold Micro" or thiazole zinc (400 times) at the base can help. Additionally, 50% copper chloride solution (300 times dilution) or 60% potassium dimethoate (500 times dilution) can be used for root irrigation to control the disease effectively.
