Even cloudy day pollination can improve pepper fruit setting rate

On cloudy days, the pollen content in capsicum is significantly reduced, and its viability is weak. This makes it difficult for pollen grains to germinate and for pollen tubes to grow properly, which can even prevent successful fertilization. To overcome this issue, shaking the plants helps transfer pollen from the anthers to the stigma, thereby supporting the fertilization process and improving the fruit set rate of peppers. The recommended method is to gently shake the entire pepper plants in the greenhouse between 9 and 11 a.m., after the cloud cover has lifted slightly. This timing ensures that the plants are exposed to enough light and warmth to enhance pollination efficiency. By implementing this technique, growers can significantly improve yield and quality, especially during periods of low natural pollination activity. This simple practice not only increases productivity but also reduces the need for artificial pollination methods, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.
