Pigeons are typically fed a diet mainly consisting of grains such as wheat, buckwheat, sorghum, corn, peas, mung beans, and millet. It's best to mix at least two types of grains when feeding them. For example, you can combine 3 parts wheat with 1 part corn and 1 part sorghum, or use 3 parts of corn and 1 part of peas along with 1 part of millet. During training sessions, it's common to use 3 parts wheat, 3 parts corn, 1 part sorghum, 1 part pea, and 1 part millet.
In addition to grains, pigeons can also benefit from green feed like fresh vegetables, cabbage, and wheat sprouts. Mineral supplements are important too. A recommended mineral mix includes 3 parts yellow clay and sand, 2 parts slaked lime, 1 part salt, 0.5 part shell flour or eggshell powder, and 0.5 part charcoal. Once crushed, these ingredients are mixed with water to form small balls, which are then dried and placed in the loft for the pigeons to peck at.
Feed your pigeons twice a day—once around 7 a.m. and again at about 4:30 p.m. Morning feed should make up one-third of their daily intake, while the afternoon meal should be two-thirds. Adult pigeons usually eat about 50 grams per day, but this amount can be increased slightly during training. Always feed them after they return to the loft so they associate coming home with getting food, reinforcing their homing instinct.
During training periods, increase the amount of corn and peas in their diet. Before feeding, always provide clean water first, followed by a light glucose solution, and then a diluted saltwater mixture. This helps keep them hydrated and energized.
In summer and during the time when young pigeons are being incubated, you can add a small amount of salt to their drinking water to support their health and development.
Pigeons are naturally clean birds, so maintaining a clean loft is essential. In summer and autumn, give them a bath at least twice a week. In winter, allow them to take a daily water bath to stay healthy and comfortable. Regular cleaning and proper feeding habits contribute greatly to the overall well-being of your flock.
