Various agricultural machines experience significant traction resistance while working in the field. If not properly maintained, tractor pulling devices and fixing bolts can become damaged or even break off. Removing broken bolts can be a challenging and time-consuming task. To address this issue, we’ve developed an effective method to extract broken bolts from machinery.
First, clean the area around the broken bolt thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris. Use a center punch to create a small indentation at the center of the bolt’s surface. Then, drill a hole with a 6-8 mm diameter bit into the center of the broken section. Make sure the hole is drilled straight and deep enough to provide a stable base for further work. After drilling, replace the small bit with a 16 mm drill bit and enlarge the hole slightly to create more space for the next step.
Next, select an electrode that is smaller than 3.2 mm in diameter and use medium to low current settings. Begin the surfacing process by welding from the inside out, gradually covering the entire length of the bolt. Start the arc carefully to avoid burning the outer wall of the bolt. Once you reach the top of the broken bolt, weld a cylindrical protrusion with a diameter of 14-16 mm and a height of 8-10 mm. This will serve as a handle for later removal.
After completing the surfacing, gently tap the end face of the welded part using a hand hammer. The vibration created will help loosen the bolt within its threaded hole. The heat generated during the welding process, combined with subsequent cooling, will cause thermal contraction, which further aids in breaking the bond between the bolt and the surrounding threads.
Carefully observe the area. When you notice signs of rust seeping out after tapping, it’s time to proceed. Place an M18 nut on top of the welded protrusion and weld it securely to the surface. This creates a solid connection that allows for easier extraction.
Once the welding has cooled slightly, use a pipe wrench to twist the nut back and forth. You can also tap the nut’s end face with a small hand hammer while turning to help break the bolt free. With consistent motion, the broken bolt should eventually come out without damaging the surrounding structure.
Finally, after removing the broken bolt, use a suitable thread chaser or tap to clean and restore the threads in the hole. This ensures that the area is ready for a new bolt and prevents future issues caused by rust or debris buildup. This method provides a practical and efficient solution for dealing with stubborn, broken bolts in agricultural equipment.
