Clivia ramets breeding good

Clivia can be propagated through ramets and seeds. Among these methods, the use of ramets offers several advantages. It allows for the selection of superior varieties, faster growth, and flowering within 3 to 4 years—about 1 to 2 years earlier than seed propagation. Additionally, this method preserves the desirable traits of the parent plant, making it a popular choice among growers. Clivia propagation can be done throughout the year, but it's best carried out during spring and autumn. The ideal periods are from February to May and from September to November. Typically, plants that are 5 to 6 years old are divided into smaller sections, each containing 5 to 6 leaves. When preparing the soil, make sure the area where the daughter plant is attached to the mother plant is exposed so it can be removed directly without cutting the shoots. If you're using pots and shoots, it's recommended to use a shallow container. When propagating via ramets, you can either cut them with a knife or gently pull them off by hand. If using a knife, make a clean cut at the junction between the daughter and mother plant. After separating the ramet, apply B12 liquid or dry wood ash to both the cut surface of the daughter and the remaining part of the mother plant to prevent rot and damage. Then, place the ramet in a pot filled with clean river sand around its roots, and cover the stems and leaves with a transparent plastic bag to reduce water loss. Keep the soil slightly moist, about 50% moisture, and place the pot in a semi-shaded area. New roots should appear within 20 to 35 days. Gently hold the base of the new plant with your hand, and you can easily separate it from the mother plant. The mother plant will heal quickly, and the daughter plant will root rapidly. For Clivia miniata and rare varieties, which produce fewer ramets, special techniques are needed to encourage more offsets. One effective method is to cut half of the mother plant’s roots with a knife or insert a pin into the center to stimulate regrowth. Regularly water the heart and leaves to slow down the mother plant’s growth, which encourages the production of more ramets. This technique can result in 3 to 5 new strains per year. After propagation, the mother plant should be properly cared for. In addition to applying B12 or wood ash to the wounds, limit watering for the first month and increase fertilization to promote strong regrowth. With proper care, the mother plant can recover quickly and continue to thrive.
