How to store corn seed in summer

Drying seeds early and keeping up with rainfall: The optimal time to dry seeds is from the beginning of March to the end of April. If the seed stock is large, it can be dried in advance based on weather conditions. During the drying process, if the moisture level hasn’t reached the storage standard, the seeds should be turned three to four times a day. On hotter days, turning them more frequently helps speed up the drying process and accumulate moisture effectively. It’s essential to ensure that the stored seed temperature does not exceed 10°C to guarantee safe storage through the summer months. Seed monitoring: When storing seeds, insert 3 to 5 thermometers into each storage area, placing them at the top, middle, bottom, left, and right positions. Also, include 1 to 2 hygrometers in the container to monitor humidity levels. Monitoring should start in April and continue until the end of October. In July and September, check daily; in other months, check every other day. Water content and bud development should be measured every two weeks. To prevent insect infestation, treated seeds are fumigated twice a year using aluminum phosphide. Fumigation is carried out before June 10th and August 10th, with a typical duration of 5 to 7 days. However, during mid to late July, an additional treatment is applied to maintain quality. Seed storage arrangement: Seed storage areas must have the floor raised 35 to 40 cm above ground level. Stacks should be no more than 10 sacks high, with a width of 1 to 1.5 meters, ensuring proper ventilation and walkways. Different seed varieties must not be mixed. Each batch should be clearly labeled with its variety, quantity, and associated records. The base of the storage area must remain at least 40 cm off the ground, using mats to create a barrier. Each stack should not contain more than 10 sacks. When closing the storage, use two layers of mats. Place three layers on top and one in the middle for extra protection. Cover with plastic sheets to guard against rain and moisture.
