Developed a capsule endoscope that can be manipulated in vitro

Japan's Ryukoku University and Osaka Medical University have developed a drive device that can control the endoscopic movement of capsules in vitro. And the success of the living experiment has been achieved.

The developed drive unit is roughly divided into two parts: (1) the generation and control of the alternating magnetic field; and (2) the micro-mechanical consisting of a small magnet and a "tail". The micro-mechanical (2) is placed in the alternating magnetic field generated by the device (1), and the magnet vibrates to drive the tail and swim like a fish. By changing the AC waveform of the device (1), the speed and direction of movement of the micromachine (2) can be freely changed.

The capsule endoscope is freely controlled from the outside by mounting the micromachine (2) in the capsule endoscope. The in vivo experiment used a small intestine capsule endoscope made by Israel Given Imaging. The micromachine can be applied to various capsule endoscopes simply by changing the size of the socket used when installing the capsule.

Given Imaging's small intestine capsule endoscope has an outer diameter of 11 mm and a length of 26 mm. After the installation of the micromachine, the size of the capsule endoscope used in the living experiment was 14 mm in outer diameter and 48 mm in length. Controlling the movement of the capsule endoscope in the stomach requires prior drinking water to swim in the water.

Live experiments were performed using dogs. The experiment roughly confirmed the following three points.

(1) The magnetic field applied by the device does not adversely affect camera photography and image transmission, and the display of the photographic image is not interfered by the external monitor;

(2) The speed and direction of movement of the capsule endoscope can be freely operated remotely from the outside;

(3) The capsule endoscope finds four hemostatic clips placed in the stomach in advance and can be photographed.

Capsule endoscopy has been put into practical use in 2001. In Japan, in April 2007, Given Imaging's capsule in the small intestine was recognized by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. In September 2008, the products of Olympus Medical System also Acquired recognition. However, the capsule endoscope currently in use cannot be operated from the outside, and its movement in the organ needs to be performed by means of peristalsis.
