How to prevent the spread of powdery mildew in the Netherlands

Orchid powdery mildew is a common fungal disease that affects the leaves, stems, and even the buds of orchids. Initially, small white, powdery spots appear on the plant surfaces, which are caused by the mycelia or conidia of the powdery mildew pathogen. If left untreated, these spots can grow larger and merge together, leading to distorted growth and the formation of black spots in advanced stages. This condition significantly impairs the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, resulting in thinner pods, reduced weight, early harvesting, and a shortened harvest period. Ultimately, this leads to lower yields and decreased profitability for growers. The fungus responsible for pea flour powdery mildew thrives in shaded, humid environments, particularly during warm days and cool nights, light rain, heavy dew, or dry weather conditions. The disease tends to spread rapidly just before and after the start of spring, making early detection and control essential. To prevent and manage this disease, several effective measures can be taken: 1. **Planting disease-resistant varieties** is the first and most important step in reducing the risk of infection. 2. **Improve field management** by ensuring proper spacing between plants, avoiding overcrowding, and applying adequate potassium fertilizer to boost the plant’s natural resistance. 3. **Early intervention** is crucial. During the early flowering stage of orchids or when only a few powdery lesions are observed, apply a 0.3% lime sulfur solution, a 5% colloidal sulfur suspension diluted 100–150 times, or a 65% mancozeb zinc solution diluted 500 times. These treatments should be applied 3 to 4 times, with intervals of 7–10 days, depending on environmental conditions. By combining cultural practices with timely chemical control, orchid growers can effectively manage powdery mildew and protect their crops from significant losses. Regular monitoring and prompt action are key to maintaining healthy and productive orchid plants.
