How to increase the reproductive power of mutton sheep

First, adjust the heat: (1) Early weaning of lambs is an effective method to implement a two-year breeding system. By weaning lambs earlier, the lactation period of ewes is shortened, which helps them enter estrus sooner and reduces the interval between lambing, thereby enabling better control over the breeding cycle. This practice also allows for more efficient management of flock reproduction. (2) Hormone treatment is another key technique. The process typically begins with weaning the lambs, followed by administering hormones to the ewes for about 10 days. After stopping the injection of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG), the ewes will experience estrus and ovulation. This method is commonly used to synchronize breeding and increase the chances of successful mating. (3) Biological stimulation involves altering environmental conditions and using sex hormones. A common approach is to adjust the light cycle and introduce rams before the breeding season starts. These changes can stimulate the ewes’ reproductive systems and encourage them to come into heat at the desired time. (4) Vaginal sponge insertion is a widely used method. Progesterone-soaked sponges are placed in the cervix of the ewes for 10 to 14 days. After removing the sponge, a dose of 400–500 IU of PMSG is administered, which triggers estrus. The ewes are then bred on the day of and the day after the injection. Common progestogens used include progesterone (150–300 mg), medroxyprogesterone (50–70 mg), methadone (80–150 mg), and 18-methyl-ethynyltestosterone (30–40 mg). (5) Oral administration of progesterone is another option. It is mixed evenly into the feed and given for 12–14 days. The dosage is usually 1/10 to 1/5 of that used in the vaginal sponge method. On the last day of feeding, a 400–750 IU intramuscular injection of PMSG is given to induce estrus. (6) Prostaglandin infusion is effective in inducing estrus. This can be done by either implanting prostaglandins directly into the uterus or injecting them intramuscularly. Ewes typically show signs of estrus within 2–3 days, making it a useful tool for synchronizing breeding. Second, superovulation is often performed in adult ewes during the first 4 days before their estrus. This involves injecting 600–1100 IU of PMSG into the muscle or under the skin on the 12th or 13th day of the estrous cycle. After estrus, the ewes are mated immediately, and on the same day, 500–750 IU of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is injected. This results in the release of several eggs, sometimes even more than 10. Third, induced twin births can be achieved through hormone injections. For double lambing or multiple births, certain additives such as water- or oil-based formulations are used. If using a water-based product, it is injected subcutaneously in the neck 5 weeks and 2 weeks before breeding, with each dose being 1 ml. For oil-based products, a single intramuscular injection of 2 ml is given 2 weeks before breeding. These methods help increase the likelihood of twins or triplets.
