With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, the catering industry has experienced rapid growth, leading to an oversupply of restaurant waste. This waste, often referred to as "gizzards," is not only low in cost but also rich in nutrients, making it a potential feed for pigs. However, because this waste contains a high amount of spoilage bacteria and harmful substances, directly feeding it to pigs can be risky. Pigs that consume raw gizzards are more likely to get sick. To make it safe and nutritious, the waste needs to be fermented before being used as pig feed. One effective method is using a fermentation starter like Gumbo starter.
In the past, I used to boil the gizzards and feed them to the pigs, which was time-consuming, energy-intensive, and inefficient. The boiled waste would spoil quickly and couldn’t be stored for long. Last year, I came across a product online called "Goldpox Hydroponic Ferment Starter," specifically designed for fermenting gizzards. I decided to give it a try and bought two bags. It worked really well—fermentation took less time, the feed could be preserved for longer, and it was easy to feed whenever needed. The fermented feed had a pleasant smell, and the pigs loved it, which led to better weight gain.
This year, I raised 200 pigs in two batches and made a profit of 60,000 yuan. Pig farming is still a profitable and promising business. The process involves mixing wheat bran, rice bran, and gizzard water in a ratio of 30%:30%:40%. If there’s excess moisture, it should be drained. Then, add 0.2% of the Goldpox starter and mix thoroughly. The moisture content should be around 65%, which can be checked by squeezing the mixture in your hand—it should form a ball without dripping, and when dropped on the ground, it should scatter easily.
Once prepared, the mixture is placed into a fermentation tank—whether small or large, even a sink can work—as long as it can hold one to two tons of material. Seal the tank and let it ferment for 3 to 5 days. After each use, cover it again, and the fermented feed can be stored for over six months without spoiling. This method not only saves time and resources but also improves the health and growth of the pigs, making it a smart and sustainable choice for farmers.
