In the sweltering heat of summer, pigs tend to eat more at night and gain weight more efficiently during this time. This is because the cooler nighttime temperatures reduce stress and minimize external disturbances, allowing pigs to eat more comfortably, rest better, and be less active during the day. To optimize feeding in such conditions, the following practices are recommended:
Feeding schedule: It's best to feed pigs three times a day—around 7 PM, 11 PM, and 4 AM. During the daytime, provide 0.5% saltwater at 10 AM and 2 PM. This helps keep them hydrated and encourages better feed intake.
Feed composition: The diet should include 20% wheat flour, 20% corn flour, 26% bran, 30% cottonseed cake, 1% fishmeal, 2.7% shell powder, and 0.3% ferrous sulfate. Before feeding, it's advisable to soak the mixture for several hours to improve digestibility and nutrient absorption.
Feeding amounts vary depending on the pig’s weight. Pigs under 35 kg should receive 2 kg of feed per day (excluding green feed) and 10 kg of saltwater. For pigs weighing between 35-60 kg, feed 2.75 kg daily along with 15 kg of saltwater. Pigs over 60 kg need 3.5 kg of feed and 17-20 kg of saltwater. When applied to pigs around 90 kg, this feeding strategy can result in a daily weight gain of approximately 0.75 kg.
In addition to proper feeding, summer care for pigs should also focus on preventing mosquito bites. A small amount of oxytetracycline can be added to their feed regularly to help prevent infections. It's also important to maintain cleanliness by cleaning the pigpen and washing feeding equipment every morning. These steps contribute to better health, improved growth, and overall well-being of the animals during the hot season.
