In the scorching heat of summer, pigs tend to eat more at night and gain weight more efficiently during this time. This is mainly due to the cooler temperatures at night, which make them more comfortable and less stressed, allowing them to eat more, rest better, and reduce their activity levels during the day. To optimize this feeding strategy, the following technical guidelines should be followed:
Feeding schedule: It's recommended to feed pigs three times a day—once at 7 PM, again at 11 PM, and finally at 4 AM. During the daytime, provide 0.5% saltwater at 10 AM and 2 PM each day. This helps keep the pigs hydrated and supports their digestion.
Feed composition: The feed mixture should consist of 20% wheat flour, 20% corn flour, 26% bran, 30% cottonseed cake, 1% fishmeal, 2.7% shell powder, and 0.3% ferrous sulfate. Before feeding, it's important to soak the feed for several hours to improve its digestibility and nutritional absorption.
Feeding quantity: For pigs weighing under 35 kg, feed 2 kg of dry feed per day (excluding green feed) along with 10 kg of saltwater. Pigs in the 35–60 kg range should receive 2.75 kg of feed daily and 15 kg of saltwater. For pigs over 60 kg, increase the amount to 3.5 kg of feed and 17–20 kg of saltwater. When this method is applied to pigs reaching 90 kg, they can gain approximately 0.75 kg per day.
Additionally, during the summer months, it's crucial to protect pigs from mosquito bites. A small amount of oxytetracycline can be added to their feed regularly to prevent infections and maintain their health. Also, ensure that the pigpen is kept clean, and all feeding equipment is washed thoroughly every morning to avoid contamination and promote good hygiene.
