Pharmaceutical manufacturers urge nanotechnology to avoid repeating GM

Faced with the potential for public skepticism similar to the European resistance toward genetically modified (GM) foods, the business sector is pushing for stronger coordination among government agencies to ensure that nanomaterials are both safe and environmentally sustainable. Raymond David, a toxicologist from BASF North America, stated in an interview: "As technology advances, consumers and advocacy groups are raising many concerns about the safety of these materials." Major players such as BASF, DuPont, and the American Chemistry Council have all endorsed the recently released National Research Council report, which calls for increased global efforts to guarantee the safety of nanotechnology research. David emphasized the urgent need for the U.S. government to establish robust safety protocols for new nanomaterials. "We're worried that our efforts might not be enough, or we could end up in a situation like Europe with GM foods. We don't want to see that happen," he said. While GM crops are widely grown around the world—especially in the soybean industry, where they make up the majority—European consumers remain highly skeptical. As a result, the approval process for GM crops has been delayed or blocked in several countries. David noted, "GMO foods haven't been as popular as expected. The food industry has a lot to learn from this. I hope we don’t repeat the same mistakes with nanotechnology."
