Changxia Dianthus, also known as Dianthus hirsutum, is a perennial herb belonging to the family Caryophyllaceae. This attractive plant typically grows to a height of 20 to 30 cm and forms dense clusters. Its leaves are long and lance-shaped, with a distinctive blue-gray color that adds visual interest. The flowers, which appear singly or in small clusters, come in shades of pink or white and bloom from May through July. The fruits develop from July to August, completing the plant's reproductive cycle. Native to Europe, Dianthus hirsutum has recently been introduced and cultivated in China, where it has gained popularity for its ornamental value. One of its notable features is its high tolerance to shade, making it suitable for a variety of garden settings. It is also winter-hardy in northern China, retaining its green foliage even after frost. The ideal growing temperature ranges between 15°C and 30°C, and it thrives in well-drained, loose, and fertile sandy loam soil. Propagation methods include seed sowing, ramet division, and cuttings. Seeds are usually sown in September in open seedbeds, and germination occurs within about five days at temperatures between 20°C and 22°C. Ramet propagation is best done in spring, while cuttings are typically taken from May to June and transplanted once roots have developed. In landscape design, Changxia Dianthus is commonly used as an edging plant in rock gardens, or planted in clusters to add texture and color. It is also popular in flower beds and along highway slopes for erosion control. With its low maintenance requirements and striking appearance, this plant is a great addition to any garden.
