Hong Kong Companies Express Optimism About the Mainland Chinese Medicine Market
The 8th "International Exhibition on Modern Chinese Medicine and Health Products," organized jointly by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Modern Chinese Medicine International Association, recently took place in Hong Kong. Over 100 companies from eight countries and regions—including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Canada—participated, showcasing a wide range of traditional and modern Chinese medicines, health products, and wellness treatments.
In addition to the exhibition, several professional conferences were held to support Hong Kong’s pharmaceutical industry in expanding into both mainland China and international markets. Topics included how to obtain global certifications for high-value medicinal products like Cordyceps sinensis and ginseng, as well as strategies to emphasize quality control, product safety, and scientific research to better attract consumers from both within and outside China.
The mainland Chinese medicine market is seen as highly promising, drawing significant interest from Hong Kong-based companies involved in traditional or modern Chinese medicine and health supplements. Huang Bowei, president of the Modernization of Chinese Medicine International Association, highlighted that the mainland’s herbal medicine market holds substantial growth potential. He predicted that the Chinese medicine industry could reach a business volume of 400 billion yuan over the next decade. If Hong Kong successfully taps into this market, the sector could become another major economic pillar for the city, further diversifying its economy and boosting long-term stability.
With increasing demand for natural and holistic health solutions, the integration of traditional Chinese medicine with modern science is gaining traction. This trend not only supports the growth of the industry but also strengthens cross-border collaboration between Hong Kong and the mainland, opening new opportunities for innovation and expansion in the global health sector.
Propionibacterium Freudennreichii
P. freudenreichii produces great-tasting cheese and important vitamins. This bacterium also beneficially modifies our microbiota and has beneficial effects on the GI tract.
In the food industry, P. freudenreichii is also used as a vitamin producer, certain strains having the ability to produce vitamins such as riboflavin and cobalamin (vitamin B12).
In addition to its traditional use, research has recently focused on health benefits related to P. freudenreichii [1]. It was shown that the consumption of this bacterium modulates the gut microbiota, which makes P. freudenreichii both a probiotic and a prebiotic.
