**Purple Setcreasea (Tradescantia pallida cv. purpurea)**
Also known as *Purple Duck Grass*, *Red Duck Tongue*, and *Purple Grass*, this attractive plant is a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor gardens. Its scientific name is *Tradescantia pallida* (Rose) D.K. Hunt cv. purpurea, and it belongs to the genus *Setcreasea* (formerly *Pyrropoda*). In English, it's commonly referred to as *Purple Setcreasea*.
This perennial herb features striking purple stems with distinct nodes, giving it a tall, upright growth habit. The leaves are long and elliptical, with a pointed tip and a stalked base. They have fine cilia along the edges and are typically pink or rose-purple in color. The flowers are small and nearly stalkless, with three free sepals and three petals. The stamens are six in number, each with hairy filaments, and the ovary is superior. The plant produces a capsule as its fruit. Native to Mexico, it has become widely cultivated around the world due to its ornamental value.
Purple Setcreasea thrives in warm, humid conditions and prefers partial shade rather than direct sunlight. It is drought-tolerant and adapts well to fertile, moist loam soil. This makes it an excellent plant for beginners or those looking for low-maintenance greenery.
Propagation is most commonly done through stem cuttings. The best time to propagate is during spring, summer, or autumn. Cut a 10 cm section from the tip of a healthy branch, remove the lower leaves, and plant it directly into potting soil. Place 3–4 cuttings in one pot, keep them in a shaded area, and maintain consistent moisture. Rooting usually takes about two weeks at temperatures between 15°C and 20°C.
For cultivation, use a mix of humus-rich soil, peat, and a small amount of river sand. Fertilize every 1–2 months during the growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering. In spring, summer, and autumn, protect the plant from direct sunlight. When the stems grow too long, pinch back the tips to encourage branching and a fuller appearance. After the older leaves at the base turn yellow and fall off, the stems may become bare. At this point, it’s a good idea to repot the plant in early spring to stimulate new growth.
This plant is ideal for decorating living rooms, studies, offices, and bedrooms. It also adds vibrant color to flower beds in the fall. With its unique color and easy care, Purple Setcreasea is a great addition to any space, whether indoors or outdoors.
