Insecticides can harm bees

Bees and other bees are important media for plant propagation of pollen, and crop growth depends to a large extent on them. But a new study in the United Kingdom shows that some agricultural pesticides used to eliminate pests can harm bee colonies. Researchers call for attention to the ecological impact that this may cause.

Researchers at the Royal Holloway School at the University of London in the UK pointed out in the report that "neonicotinoid insecticides" and "pyrethroid insecticides" are two common insecticides. According to the concentration of agricultural pesticides, the researchers spread the two insecticides in an artificial environment, and then placed the bumblebees on them to collect honey and observe whether they would be affected.

A four-week experiment showed that these insecticides affected bee colonies in two ways: First, the mortality rate of individual Bumblebees that went out to collect honey increased, which directly caused a decrease in the number of individuals in the colony. Second, with the successive death of worker bees, the number of foods that can be collected by the whole bee colony will decrease, and this will affect the breeding of bee colonies.

According to reports, the number of bee colonies in the world has decreased in recent years, but the reasons are still difficult to determine. Some studies have suggested that bee-like diseases are one of the causes. At the same time, studies have also shown that people can use insecticides to affect honey collection behavior of individual bees. This experiment confirmed that the impact of insecticides can indeed be transmitted from the individual to the entire bee colony, affecting the stable presence of bee colonies.

The researchers pointed out that the current detection of pesticides is often to test the effect of a certain insecticide alone in the presence of bees, but this study shows that in the case of the above two kinds of pesticides simultaneously, the bees Damage to the group will increase significantly. Bees tend to go back and forth across multiple fields, and there is a high probability of exposure to various pesticides. Therefore, the parties concerned should consider how to manage the use of pesticides from this perspective.
