Learning anatomy using 3D printed anatomical models

Release date: 2016-01-28

Anyone who has attended a high school biology class may remember to spend hours studying the dazzling human anatomy. Imagine if this anatomical picture becomes a real 3D printed model, then it will be much easier for students to learn about the human body structure and various internal organs.

In order to put this idea into practice and make his biology less attractive, a bioteacher, a member of the NVBot teacher's 3D printing platform, hired industrial designer Jordan Pelovitz to design and 3D print a realistic human body. Anatomical models allow students to interact with and learn from them. As part of the agreement, Pelovitz had to design a model that showed how various human anatomy systems relate to each other.

The end result is a fully 3D printed human "panel" that includes all the human organs and tissues from the joints to various bones and muscle cells.

“This project comes from a bioteacher on the NVBot platform.” Pelovitz said he has more than a decade of experience in 3D modeling and 3D printing. “I have to divide some organ models into smaller parts for printing. My task is to build two organ systems, and I chose the digestive system model and part of the skeletal system.”
To make the digestive system, Pelovitz designed and 3D printed all the large intestine, small intestine, liver, and stomach, and these 3D printing organs needed to be able to fit into a dummy model. The 3D printed skeletal system is part of the human leg and includes a 3D printed femur model.
In addition to 3D printing of these major organs or bones, the detailed 3D printed anatomical model produced by Pelovtiz also shows the difference between different smooth muscle cells and smooth muscle tissue, as well as the differences between bone tissue and osteoblasts.

“The most challenging part of this project is that the final 3D printed objects can also be combined with each other,” says Pelovtiz. In order to complete this "3D puzzle", Pelovitz first printed several reduced-size prototypes in 3D to measure the proportional relationship between them.
From the British Virgin Islands, Pelovitz has a background in industrial design and new media design and is currently offering courses in product/game design 3D modeling.
