Israeli researchers have devised a sensor that can detect molecules directly related to lung cancer in 86% of patients' breathing. The invention was published in the latest issue of Natural Nanotechnology.
A group of researchers at the Israel Institute of Technology studied the use of gold nanoparticles to detect the so-called "volatile organic compounds" (VOC) in the breath, and the VOCs of cancer patients exceeded normal values. Israeli researchers hope to use this technology to develop inexpensive portable detectors that are easy for family doctors to use at any time to avoid delays in diagnosis.
