Digital diagnosis improves the detection rate of pneumoconiosis

Release date: 2009-07-29

Pneumoconiosis caused by a large amount of dust erosion is sometimes more terrible than mine disasters. A project titled "Application Research of Computer-Aided Detection in the Dynamic Diagnosis of Pneumoconiosis" was approved by experts from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission. This digital diagnostic system jointly developed by Chinese and American scientists will greatly improve the reading speed of X-ray chest radiographs and the detection rate of pneumoconiosis, effectively blocking the "no bloodshed mine disaster."

Pneumoconiosis is a systemic disease caused by diffuse fibrosis of lung tissue caused by long-term inhalation of productive dust during production activities. China is the country with the most serious pneumoconiosis in the world. Millions of first-line workers work year-round in the harsh environment of mining, smelting, manufacturing, building materials and road construction. As of the end of last year, the country has reported more than 638,000 cases, accounting for more than 90% of the total number of occupational diseases. From chest tightness, coughing to the final lung failure, difficulty breathing, pneumoconiosis kills thousands of workers every year, more than a few times the death toll.

Chest X-ray radiation projection is an important means of lung disease examination. At present, the diagnosis of pneumoconiosis can only be read by doctors on the chest radiograph, which is costly and inefficient. Usually, 500 chest radiographs can be read in one day, which seriously restricts the screening ability of medical institutions and becomes pneumoconiosis. A major obstacle to prevention.

It is reported that the computer diagnostic technology for pneumoconiosis has taken a year and a half to successfully develop and invest nearly 10 million yuan. The technology was completed by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and GE China R&D Center. Technology Through the analysis of digital X-rays, dynamic diagnosis and disease assessment of diseases can be performed, and diagnostic recommendations can be made. This will greatly improve the accuracy and speed of diagnosis of pneumoconiosis. It is understood that in the traditional diagnosis, the doctor takes an average of three minutes to judge an X-ray film, and the computer-aided detection technology can complete the diagnosis in fifty-four seconds.

The "Computer Aided Detection Pneumoconiosis Dynamic Diagnosis System" prepared by Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and GE (China) R&D Center is essentially a set of computer software. It integrates computer, image processing, artificial intelligence and other information technologies to independently screen digital X-ray chest images, distinguish between positive cases and classifications, and also compare chest images of different subjects at different times. Realize the dynamic monitoring and evaluation of the disease. The system can run at speeds of up to 24 seconds per frame.

After clinical data collection and software optimization, the software is expected to be embedded in mobile medical equipment. As the physical examination vehicle goes deep into the remote mining area, regular physical examination and screening are performed for frontline workers. With the help of the Internet, experts in large cities can complete remote diagnosis within a few hours and detect suspicious cases in time. In addition, this convenient new technology can also be used for the early diagnosis of chest diseases such as tuberculosis, lung cancer, heart disease and pleural disease, and is expected to play a role in the prevention and control of respiratory diseases such as SARS and influenza A.
