Singapore Discovers New Variants of HIV

Singapore researchers recently said that they have discovered a new variant of HIV. It is generated by the combination of two kinds of virus strains that are common in the local place by gene recombination, and the harm may be stronger than the existing common strains.

The researchers said that they analyzed blood samples from 109 HIV-infected people from February 2008 to August 2009 and found that 15 of them were infected with the new virus.

Previously, the two most common strains of HIV in Singapore were subtype B and the other type, CRF01-AE, reconstituted from subtype A and subtype E. It is these two original strains that have undergone genetic recombination and formed a newly discovered strain of this strain. It was named CRF51-01B type.

According to reports, HIV can synthesize new strains through genetic recombination. Before that, 50 strains of different subtypes have been found in the world, and Singapore has discovered the 51st strain.

Preliminary studies show that this new strain may be more harmful. But researchers say existing therapies are still effective. However, what is really worrying is the reorganization of HIV, which means that the original virus carriers have been infected with two different subtypes of HIV, and the most common route of transmission is sexual contact.
