Scientists make miniature artificial lungs to grow their own breathing

Release date: 2010-07-16

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, US scientists have recently published a new study for the first time: artificially cultured lung cells in the laboratory with stem cells, which can survive for 6 hours.
The research team at Harvard Medical School in the United States removed the cells from the lungs of the mice, leaving only the extracellular matrix as a "support" for new lung growth. Subsequently, they implanted human umbilical cord cells and mouse embryonic cells that can be directed into lung cells in a "support" and placed them in an incubator that mimics the living environment of the organism.
This tiny artificial lung grows continuously in the incubator and begins oxygen exchange after about 1 week, which is like "breathing" like normal lungs. After being implanted in the mouse, the artificial lungs continued to work and the mice survived for 6 hours.
Researchers say there is still a long way to go to develop a usable human lung in a similar way, but within five to ten years, the research will make significant progress and eventually be put into practical medical applications, requiring lungs. The transplanted patient solves the problem of insufficient lung supply.
