German invention can help patients with eye diseases recover vision chips

Release date: 2010-11-05

German researchers have reported that they have invented an electronic chip that can be implanted into the eye to replace the damaged retinal cells to emit sensitization signals. A blind patient who has been blind for many years can already identify the items in front of the eye.
The researchers reported in a new issue of the British Royal Society Journal B that the role of this electronic chip is to replace damaged photoreceptors in the retina, suitable for patients with blindness due to retinal damage, such as retinitis pigmentosa patient. The researchers implanted chips for three volunteers who were blinded by the disease, and now they have restored vision to varying degrees. One of the subjects recovered particularly well and was able to identify the cutlery on the table in front of them. , apples, bananas and other items.
According to reports, the patient named Mika Terho is a Finnish. Affected by the disease, his vision has been declining since he was a teenager. He lost his vision at the age of 30 and has been blind for more than 10 years. He told the media that he had tried to use the chip three or four days after the operation and began to see only some flashes, but the scene gradually became clear. “I can now recognize the larger letters and distinguish whether others are wearing white lab coats, yellow T-shirts or blue jackets,” says Terho.
Eberhardt Zrenner, a professor at the University of Tübingen in Germany, who led research, said that for patients blinded by retinal damage, the use of this electronic chip can restore their vision to the level of daily life.
The researchers also said that this chip is different from other artificial vision devices in that some of the previous devices completely bypass the structure of the eye itself, so not only the photosensitive device but also the optical signal processing and transmission device are needed; The chip simply replaces the damaged photoreceptor cells, and the light signals it senses are still transmitted and processed by healthy cells in the eye. This technology is still in the experimental stage, and British researchers are also planning to conduct related tests next year.
