American scientists find a way to anesthetize painless nerve cells

Release date: 2007-10-12

American scientists have found a method of anesthetizing pain cells only. Traditional local anesthetics numb nerve cells at the site of application, rather than anesthetizing nerve cells, so they cause temporary paralysis. American scientists have recently announced the discovery of a method of anesthetizing pain cells using capsaicin.

They injected capsaicin from red peppers and a small amount of anesthetic in mice. These two components combine to numb the painful nerves and block the stimulation of the painful sensations they send to the brain. Experiments have shown that mice can still operate normally after the injection of this anesthetic. The researchers believe that this new anesthetic method can be used for dental, knee and other bone and joint surgery, childbirth and other chronic pain.

Bruce Bien of Harvard Medical School said: "The pain and nerves of mice and people are very close, so this method should be used on people." Clifford Woolf of Massachusetts General Hospital participating in the research project The doctor is optimistic that this method will be tested in humans within two or three years. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association website
